Tree Week 2024
The Green-Schools Biodiversity Team is delighted to join together with LEAF Ireland to celebrate Tree Week with us from Monday, March 4th to Friday, March 8th.
We have an exciting line-up of live talks, activities, and prerecorded videos ready to share with you. Below you will find activities you can get involved in each day. We have two indoor options to learn more about Irish Trees and two outdoor options each day for junior and senior students so get stuck in and enjoy the week!
Monday:

Ag Caint leis na Crainn

Get Out:
Junior Activity– Shake a Tree! Discover what insects are living on tree leaves and branches with this simple activity. Check out this demonstration video before heading outside to try it out.
Senior Activity– Trees and Climate Change. Investigate how much carbon dioxide a tree on your grounds has absorbed with this activity. Watch the demonstration video and then use our activity sheet to find out!

- Think you know a lot about trees? Try our interactive Native Tree Quiz
- Watch this short video on Rowan Trees to learn more about a tree often found on school grounds!
Get Out:
- Junior Activity- Age and Height of a Tree. Find out what the oldest and tallest tree on your grounds or local park is! Watch out demonstration video and take our activity sheet with you.
- Senior Activity– Do you have lots of trees growing on your grounds or in your community? Why not make a simple Tree Trail? Make a map and identify the different trees you find. If they are in your school you could make signs to label what you have found. Get some other tips here and see an example of a tree trail from a park here.
Wednesday:

- Register to take part in this webinar on Edible Trees from 11.15 to 12
Join us for this interactive webinar to learn about how trees feed us and other animals! Discover the tasty (and not so tasty!) fruits, nuts and flowers that grow on Irish trees and why them produce them.
- Check out some of the activities in these great worksheets from the Tree Council (available in English and Irish)
Get Out:
- Junior activity– Colours Hunt. Head outside for a relaxing activity and just focus on colours. Use our Colour Hunt sheet or make your own with paint samples or colour wheels and see if you can match leaves, flowers etc to as many different colours as you can find.
- Senior activity– Flooding Experiment. This one needs some preparation! You will need some soil and a potted plant or tree. Learn how trees help prevent flooding. Watch this demonstration video and then try it out with our activity sheet.

Thursday:
Learn:
- Watch this 10 minutes video to learn about the beautiful Birch Tree
- Try some drawing with our Native Species Cards. Pick your favourite tree and give it a go!
Get out:
- Junior Activity- Get creative and go outside for some natural art like Bark Rubbing
- Senior Activity- Create a piece of art outside just using leaves, twigs, stones and whatever you find outside. Make sure you don’t destroy any plants or living things! Use things that are already on the ground. Get some inspiration here.

- Watch this 20 minute video on Irish Woodlands to learn about how trees live together and even communicate with each other!
- Test what you have learned over the last week with this table quiz done through this interactive video
Get Out:
Plant a Tree! Suitable for all ages! March is the last month of bare root season which means you can often find low cost trees in many garden centres. Bare root trees do not come in pots so they must be planted quickly! Choose something native. Get some advice with our bare root planting guide.
